Because of their higher intelligence and small size, they have the ability to adapt to most any living situation - being as happy in a small apartment as they would be in a large house.

This breed is hypoallergenic, which means that their dander production and shedding is very insignificant, but their grooming needs are such that potential owners need to be aware of them. They have a soft, long, double coat which should be brushed a minimum of twice a week to avoid tangling and matting. Although they do not need to be regularly trimmed, the hair growing between their paw pads and inside of their ears, needs to be removed periodically.

Some of the typical characteristics of these dogs are that they generally are extremely intelligent and responsive, very gentle and playful, they love to give and get affection, and they are incredibly social. One thing that may or may not be an issue, is that they tend to form extreme attachments to their owners and will follow them everywhere - often becoming severely depressed when separated. For this reason, these pups do not thrive in situations where they are left alone for hours each day.
