Applications Of Tungsten Carbide Parts

By Maria Wallace

Tungsten is one of the most popular materials used in metallic applications. People and manufacture consider its usage due to its high resistance to acid, high melting point and low electrical resistivity. Its production involves reacting tungsten and carbon at extremely high temperature. Here are a few tips on the usage of tungsten carbide parts that one should take note.

Manufacture of cutting tools. Cutting tools made out of this material are resistant to abrasion and can withstand very high temperatures compared with high-speed steel. They have a sharper cutting edge better than steel tools hence their use in devices that require precision. Their ability to resist heat makes them suitable for faster machining. The material used in this process has metallic cobalt that works as the matrix.

Assembly of ammunition. For quite an extended period, uranium has been the common material used in manufacturing high-armored ammunition. However, with the decreasing uranium reserves and strict regulation in its usage, this metal is quickly replacing its usage. It is ideal for both lightweight ammunition and high-velocity guns. This consideration relies on its high density and hardness.

Assembly of mining tools. Stainless steel has been a common material used to make mining tools for quite a long time. However, it wears quite heavily when used in high temperature and fast drilling. Therefore, this sort of metal has been a suitable replacement for stainless steel since it can withstand high heat and does not break easily. The material is recyclable at large masses. Therefore, recyclers can ensure that there are quality materials in the market at all-time in the market.

Suitable for nuclear reflectors. Tungsten carbide has become popular in nuclear production as reflectors. The reaction process resulted from an accident where one of the scientists involved in nuclear testing dropped the material in a plutonium reactor. A series of neutron reaction occurred which led to strong energy production. The element has been a standard material used in making reflectors in nuclear reactors since then.

It is used to make jewelry. This material has become popular in the manufacture of wedding rings over the recent years. It is quite harder compared with gold and can create a remarkable appearance when polished well. It can also make pendants, ear ring and other jewelry as long as the cutting process goes well. It is a cost-effective option if you compare with gold.

Surgical tools production. The production of tools used in surgeries requires precision and a lot of care. The production process requires a material that cannot pit or rust easily. Tungsten carbide has become a common tool used in such products due to its properties. However, their usage involves the edges. Other parts such as the stem use metal such as uranium and stainless steel. One can re-sharpen the edges when they wear out without worrying about pitting.

Sports usage. There is a lot of sports usage that relies on this material. The sports products include the production of trekking poles, ski poles, cleat, shoeing of horses and making motorcycle and bicycle tires. These products have quite a longevity compared with other makes in the market. It also provides better sturdiness compared with other materials.
