Benefits And Procedures On Seal Coating

By Walter Wagner

Paving companies puts a layer of asphalt on the road. This will keep the driveway and roads even and fix the damage. To keep the asphalt from elements and further damages, they put a protective sealant on it. This ensures that the binder does not degrade. The companies use seal coating Anderson to repair that many South Carolina roads.

Yet, the question remains as to why it is important to apply this sealant. The answer lies in its ingredient properties. This is an emulsion product that is either bituminous or acrylic base. The former is a thin yet protective liquid that provides a waterproof layer for the underlying pavement. On the other hand, the latter is known as the most perfect sealant for it is resistant to ultraviolet rays, highly durable, and environment friendly.

It also fills tiny holes and cracks. Damages caused by changes in weather conditions and coming in contact with chemicals will be prevented. It will also make the asphalt survive these conditions twice as much as its life. Due to this, it is going to save you money especially if you use sealants that are acrylic base. With that, you can do recoats once every seven years.

Water absorption to the asphalt will be minimized as well. Come cold season, it would prevent the water droplets and moisture from freezing the driveways. Constant cycles of freezing and thawing can create damages such as cracks and alligator cracks. Although, the coat will make the surface have an attractive black color and make it smooth.

When a new pavement has been made, you need to pour coat on it after a year. This will allow the surface to properly wear the coat and cure the asphalt. Understand however that due to the friction from passing cars, your driveway can incur damage and tearing. As a result, you must do reapplication every two or three years.

Before application, you have to follow certain steps to ensure optimal results, protection, and performance. One step is to ensure that the temperature is at fifty degrees and above for less than twenty four hours. Never apply if it is below the minimum temperature. The same inaction is expected if the weather forecast says it will rains within that time period.

When applying, cover the whole surface with at least two coats. Let it dry and cure the asphalt properly. Make sure that no leaves or any debris will fall onto it as it affects the emulsion properties in the sealant. Protect the area for at least thirty six hours. However, it is recommended to leave it for a maximum of forty hours. That way, the chemical emulsion can assuredly get set and cure.

One tip for the application is to use spray bottles. Not only would this be convenient, it would also save time than using the regular squeegee, especially when you have a large surface to cover. Another is that thickening the layers of the coat would not be practical and efficient. Thinner coats will absorb faster than that.

Cleaning such as removing debris and fallen leaves can also be done through the pressure washer. Aside from that, but the growing vegetation in the cracks also removed. Larger cracks needs to be patched and covered since the sealant can only cover one eighth inch of holes and cracks. Due to the associated stain from the coat, you need to cover yourself and the surroundings with protective plastic.
