Electricians are professionals who have skills and specialization in the electrical wiring of various structures and pieces of equipment including stationary machines and buildings. The work of electricians involves working on old as well as new projects. New sites are workplaces where there is not preexisting electrical components laid down. Thus, the wiring is fresh. On the other hand, old sites already have preexisting wiring that only needs to be repaired or maintained. To be a good electrician one should possess excellent practical skills and ability to follow technical plans.

Like other fields, eletrotechnical profession has minimum academic and professional qualifications. In the UK, entry-level requirements include industry-recognized level 3 qualification. These qualifications can usually be earned while they are already employed. It is also possible to specialize in a specific area by undergoing further training. Some of the areas of specialization available include water vessels, environmental technology systems, airplanes, and mobile platforms and many others. One can usually choose one or multiple specialties to specialize in.

One of the routes into this profession is undertaking a few years of electrotechnical apprenticeship. To be better placed, the apprenticeship training should be combined with college education and where possible, working on the job. It takes between two to four years for one to be fully qualified. Whatever range of apprenticeships available in an area is dependent on local job market.

Local colleges offer full time and part time courses which anyone interested in entering this industry can take. There are many areas covered during training including basic electrical theory and industry safety and health. While in college, learners also gain many practical skills. One can proceed to gain higher qualifications once they have basic college training.

Electricians can work in a wide variety of areas. Part of their work involves installing, inspecting, and testing equipment to make sure that they are working well. If they find mistakes or faults, they fix them. Electrotechnical careers can be placed into various classes. Some of them include highway systems, maintenance, installation, machine repair and rewind and electrotechnical panel building electricians.

Those specializing in installations install various systems like lighting, power, fire protection, and data network in sports stadiums, workplaces, homes, shops and forms of structures. Maintenance specialists have to do regular inspection of systems to ensure their safe and efficient performance. Highway systems electricians install and manage street lights and traffic management systems.

Basically, electricians work during week days for more than 37 hours per week. They may have night shifts and overtimes are common. The job involves excess travelling as jobs change regularly. Workers may stay for several days without returning home because of work. Owning a car and having a driving license makes travelling easier.
