A Parent's Guide to Buying Ice Skating Costumes

By Jessica Gibson

Skating can be fun and exciting. Whether you are taking lessons for recreational purposes or because you want to compete you will need the right outfit to skate in. Ice skating costumes are available in many different styles and fabrics. Here is what you need to know when you go shopping for your next skating outfit.

One of the first things that you will realize is that what looks and feels good to practice in will be very different than what looks good when you are performing. Skating can be very rough and it is not uncommon to fall quite a bit especially when you are starting out. Clothing that is easy to stretch and bend in is a good option for training.

Some great choices include leggings or tights that are warm enough to handle the cold of an arena but which can stretch and move as the skater practices different moves and steps. You also want to look for clothing that is made of thin fabric that can be layered. As a skater begins to work, they will get warmer and warmer. Being able to take layers off as they become unnecessary will be of great help to an athlete.

Performance clothing is going to be different than practice clothing. Many outfits that are worn to perform in are designed with sequins and beads that sparkle in the light. Some will have themes while others will simply be abstract and lovely to look at.

Individuals who are performing solo routines will have more freedom about what they can wear. Any time you have a partner or there are other people in a particular routine you will need to make sure that the costumes coordinate. Some coaches will want duets to wear matching costumes while others will simply want the outfits to work well together.

If you are entering a competition you may want to find out if there are any rules or regulations that may influence what a particular skater can wear. You don't want to spend quite a bit of money on a costume only to have a routine marked down or disqualified because the costume that has been chosen doesn't adhere to the rules.

Some skating schools or clubs will choose what the students wear when they perform or compete. They will measure the participants and will order the correct size. This can help take a lot of stress and worry out of the process. They are often much more aware of any rules or guidelines that surround what a skater can or cannot wear when competing.

Even if you live in a small town it is getting easier and easier to find costumes for your ice skater. You may want to start by asking other skating parents where they got the costumes their children are wearing. You may also have luck if you look online. There are many websites that have costumes and you may be able to get them to send you a catalogue of styles that you can choose from.
