Helpful Tips You Can Use In Garment Cleaning

By Walter West

It's sometimes a real bother to clean clothes properly when there are stains involved. A lot of the time, stain removal ends up making the problem worse than before, and perhaps you were better off leaving the stain there altogether! The following is a set of helpful tips in everyday garment cleaning that might save you some stress, time and also dry cleaning or new clothes money.

Stains should always be dealt with as soon as they happen. The longer a stain is left to set, the less chance there will be of ever getting it out. If it's not possible to immediately deal with the stain, leave the item of clothing soaking in a bucket filled with water and a little bit of detergent. Always soak first and treat after, not vice versa.

Always sort laundry into relevant, similar piles of clothing. This will help in preserving color, but also in keeping certain fabrics at their best for longer. This is especially true when dealing with whites and delicates. Keep items lint-free by washing towels, sweaters and other fabrics likely to pile separately.

Add soap to the machine and allow it to mix with the water before putting garments into the machine. This will allow the detergent to evenly distribute throughout the water, and then do the same for an even clean of the clothing. This will minimize chances of any discoloration on garments due to detergent settling.

You can immediately treat some stains even if you can't wash by machine. These hacks are great because they can be done with regular, everyday items in the home. Some of the most commonly-occurring stains include blood, makeup, wine and oil. Always treat a stain as soon as you can otherwise it could stay permanently. Another familiar concept is that like substances will treat a stain well.

Makeup that is oil-based can be cleaned with something oil-based to remove. Lipstick should be blotted with a dry, clean tissue in order to get rid of any excess color. Then spray the stain with water - without soaking - and rub in just a drop of dish cleaning liquid. Leave this to sit for about 15 minutes and then rub it into the fabric in circular movements starting from the outside towards the center. Finish up by blotting the area with a towel.

Makeup foundation that is liquid or creamy needs to be scraped with something like a plastic knife to remove the excess. Then blot the stain with a paper towel that is damp to remove as much as possible. Pour a little bit of hydrogen peroxide onto the stained area and work it into the fabric using your hands, before using a toothbrush on it. After these steps, you can go ahead and machine wash.

Blood stains can be treated with vinegar before laundering. However, if you happen to be out and unable to get home in time to treat a blood stain, try rubbing it with Coca-Cola or milk for some pretty impressive instant results. And, as always with stained clothing, wash, launder or dry cleaning as soon as possible after treating in order to keep the garment in top condition for longer.
