Electroless Nickel Coating. How To Improve Its Performance

By Matthew Patterson

EN coating is a process done to produce nickel phosphorous coating which can be use for the enhancement of corrosion, resistance to wear, and to increase the hardness of the surface even. Electroless nickel coating MI is used by many because it does not require an electric current unlike others.

You see, there are many advantages that you can get out of this such as being able to coat it uniformly and being flexible in controlling your coat to achieve the right thickness. You see, such process is a bit complex so you have to be precise with in doing your actions and must execute the steps properly. Below are your guide in enhancing the performance of electroless nickel coating.

One, prepare the parts. Before doing the processing part, you need to prepare the parts already. You need to chemically pretreated it and afterward rinsed it out with water to remove those surface contaminants before the plating starts. To improve the condition of the surface, you want to do a mechanical finishing process.

Have the water purified. The problem you feel face about water is you have to do some purification into it first before using. You see, water is going to be filled with foreign matters which is naked to the eye. In order to remove those, the water has to go over purification. Just be prepared as the whole operation could take long.

Three, know what tank to use. Selecting tanks is a crucial part. The tank is responsible for holding the EN bath which means you can only use a tank made from polypropylene and stainless steel. If you compare the two, stainless is the one that will last longer. However, if you want to prevent plate out, polypropylene is the better choice.

Fourth, constant filtering is needed. The plating bath contains insoluble materials and that should not be present. In order to remove that filtering it is the only solution. The reason being, the substrate might roughen. Every time you turn it over, do the purification four to five times and that is per hour. When you do this, all the impurities will be gone.

Five, control the temperature. You have to monitor the temperature of the plating bath all throughout the whole process. That is because, when the temperature is too high, decomposition could speed up and if it is the opposite, the process will go beyond the accepted level which might prevent coating deposition from happening.

Sixth, continuously test the solution. The chemicals you are going to add on it should be balanced for it to become effective. A tip would be to add a little amount first so that you will not put too much. When it is not the right amount yet, keep on adding until you got it right. This is the trick you need to know.

Seven, conduct some post treatment process. To prevent stain from happening apply some chromate to the area. For harmful conditions, baked the plating first before using it. Post treatment is a very important step that you have to do. If you do not do this there is a great chance that staining and harmful conditions will appear.
