How To Carry Out Electronic Equipment Storage

By Dorothy Perry

Electronic equipment is sensitive. Since, electronics have many individual pieces and parts, they need special care before storing them. Storage conditions can affect the future functionality of electronics. When planning to carry out long term electronic equipment storage, you should take several steps to prepare the items so that they will remain in good condition.

You should obtain the correct storage solutions like moving and packing supplies. Some of the supplies you need include bubble wrap, scissors, newsprint, markers, packaging tape and sturdy cartons. If the original specially designed cartons are accessible, you should utilize them since the electronics will fit in them perfectly.

When storing electronics such as computers, it is prudent to back up the data. This way, you not lose important data if the hard drives malfunction after storing the equipment for a long period. Electronic gadgets can cease to function well if they remain without power or unused for long periods. For example, hard drives can cease to function after not being used for a long period. Backing up data and saving it online, in other storage gadgets or external hard drives will keep it safe and secure.

Many electronics have numerous parts making up the main device and its complementary parts. Prior to storing the electronics, pull the individual parts apart and keep them separately. You also need to store the plugs separately since they will not be in use. If you have placed DVDs, CDs or game cartridges in the gadgets, take them out and store them separately so that they will not sustain damage or get jammed in drives over time.

It is essential to clean dirt and dust from electronics before storing them. It is hard for small amount of dirt and dust to cause damage to electronics. However, if left for a long time, dirt and dust can damage the electronics. It is therefore wise to wipe down all the accessible surfaces to remove all contaminants from the electronic equipment. You can clean dust and debris from hard to access areas using a compressed air duster.

It is also vital to cover screens, monitors and other items in cotton, canvas or cardboard among other materials that can remain in good condition during long term storage. If there is dust where you have stored your items, it will accumulate on these materials instead of the electronics. You should avoid wrapping electronics in plastic because it can make them susceptible to the buildup of moisture over time.

If the equipment you need to store has batteries, ensure that you remove them. The battery container could get ruined if you were to let the batteries remain in electronic gadgets. Moreover, acid from the batteries could possibly damage the electronic equipment. Besides, it is difficult to clean acid and it can harm your skin if it comes into contact with it.

It is crucial to store electronic equipment in the right environment. You should not store the items in areas that are too windy, hot, cold or humid. You can store the electronics safely for a long time in climate controlled storage units. Such units will allow you to control the temperature and humidity levels that the electronics are exposed to.
