DMX mergers are the standard with digital communication networks and are commonly used for controlling stage effects and lights. They originally were intended to be a standardized means in the control for light dimmers. They now are used as primary means for linking controllers, dimmers and special effects devices. Its use encompasses various platforms including Christmas lights and also billboards.

Its network uses multi-drop bus topology using nodes that are strung together in a daisy chain. The network is composed of a single controller being the master and one or more slave devices. The controller only has the out connector. Each slave device consists of an in connector and an out connector. The out connector of the controller is connected to the first slave device through its in connector then a second cable would link the out connector into the in connector of the second slave device. The final out connector would have a terminator plugged to it.

Data get sent with EIA 485 voltage levels. The wiring in the network is composed of a twisted pair being shielded and there is a termination resistor absorbing signal reflections. Data link uses the five pin electrical connector. Eight pin modular connectors can be used as well when the installations are fixed.

For the datalink layer, controllers transmit serial data which is asynchronous. Format is fixed as one start bit, no parity, eight data bits and two stop bits. Start gets signified through a break, signaling an end of one packet, then a mark.

The wide variety of consoles, controllers and devices are used for connecting greater varieties of lighting accessories and fixtures. Intelligent lighting can be observed in many settings. It even is the main attraction for some places such as theme parks and also used for various shows including fountain shows and more.

It also has been widely used for architectural lighting project. They are used to illuminate exteriors of buildings, as accent and general use for building management. It is also being used for high end residential lighting. The popularity of LED lighting fixtures contribute to its wide use in architecture.

There have been developments in this technology including the use of adapters which are wireless. That is useful for architectural lighting because cable lengths can be limited, so wireless operation becomes very desirable. It would make use of transmitters that are wireless on controllers and there would be receivers positioned next to fixtures where wireless signals may be converted into the conventional wired signal.
