Street Lighting And Its Importance

By Essie Osborn

Paths and roads are fitted lamps that are fixed on long posts which are meant to provide light to street users. The putting off and on these lamps is normally controlled from one central position. In recent development they have been improved in such a way that they can control themselves by sensing when its dark so that they can light up and switch off when its day time. Street lighting is important in that it save people from accidents and reduce wrongdoings.

These lights are not only meant to light up at night, but can also automatically turn on when there is dark weather. These bulbs are normally placed on some tall poles alongside the roads though some may also be fitted on utility poles.

Recent information gotten from researchers who carried out their research on all road users says that the use of lights on the road sides has helped cut down the level of crime. It is said that when there is light many people can walk at night without much fear as compared to when it is dark and also much light keeps away criminals.

This though should be done with concern to which type of lights to put on the roads. Some lamps are so bright that instead of making one feel safe it makes one not to see properly. That excess glare would make one fear all the more. Road lamps should be of uniform light that is able to eliminate shadows that are dark and glare to make an individual feel secure.

The cost of fittings these lamps though is much adding onto it its maintenance. A much as one may argue that it is really not clear which type of crimes are cut down by illumination or even it is not possible to attach a figure of the importance of it, it still remains that these road light can never be a miss.

Not only does light reduce bad actions at night but it has an economic importance of making the public to work long hours at night or even overnight which in return improves the development of a region. For an economy to be a 24 hour economy the core thing is always light. Another added advantage of proper illumination on highways and roads is that many accidents are prevented and hence the drivers, bikers and pedestrians are safe.

Form the conducted research there has been proof that it aids in reducing the rate of accidents occurrences. This could be true considering that many of the injuries from accidents are normally during the night. It is known that at night the road rules may be bended since there are rarely police men on the roads and hence the drivers are at liberty to do whatever they want. However, though this may be done the essential of light remains important in helping cut down accident rate.

The whole summary of these leads us to concluding presence of light is at the favor of the public and if anything it should be improved in all areas. However, there are some environmental related reasons why organizations would like light reduced but the security reason outweighs them all.
