Kenai River Lodge Is Great For Trophy Salmon Fishing

By Mattie MacDonald

Alaska is a great destination for lovers of wildlife and outdoor activities. It is also one of the best destinations in the world for top class angling. Many species of fish enjoy the pristine waters but the most famous is the King salmon. These beasts reach incredible sizes and the Kenai River Lodge is a good place to land some mighty fish.

The Peninsula lies just south of Anchorage so it is easy to get to, just three hours by road. The lodge is just off the Sterling Highway so is easy to find. However, its proximity to the capital and road network does not spoil the feeling of remoteness enjoyed there. The population of the whole region is less than 60 000 people and you can hike for days without seeing anyone.

King salmon is the most sought after fish in the river. They can grow to huge sizes so the area is fantastic for trophy fishing, do not forget your camera. The King salmon has two runs from may to June so check with local guides exactly when the best time to arrive will be for the fish you wish to catch or the angling technique you prefer. For example, if you like fly fishing the shallow waters of the early season will be best.

Timing is probably best decided according to the type of fishing you prefer. If fly fishing is your thing then best to travel when the river is low at the beginning or end of the season. If you want to catch one of those giant Kings then you better head out in June or July when the river is high and the big boys are making the last run.

The Kenai Lodge has four hundred feet of waterfront so there is plenty of room for bank fishing. They also provide walkways and stairs for wading, fish cleaning tables, grills, a hanging station and freezer space for the catch. The accommodation is comfortable with river views and there are rooms of all sizes, including a suite.

The wider area of the peninsula is perfect for nature lovers and sports people. Local rivers and fjords provide a number of exciting kayaking and white water rafting opportunities. Hiking trails cross the landscape and can be used for mountain biking and cross country running. Local wildlife is spectacular with bears, elk, moose and lots of birds.

The wider region provides opportunities for a number of activities and lots of wildlife viewing. Kayaking and rafting are both popular activities with some excellent white water runs for novices and experienced riders. The natural beauty is endless so bird watchers will be happy. Big game is prolific in the area with bears, moose and elk all wandering close by. Whale watching is also available in the Prince William Sound.

For a fantastic fishing experience the Kenai River is a great place to go. Salmon is the main catch but anglers will be amazed by the range of species and the size of the fish. The area is easy to reach yet is an unspoiled wilderness of incredible beauty. Other activities include hiking, bird watching, canoeing, mountain biking and rafting.
