Avoid The Risk Of Fire By Landscaping

By George Dodson

Landscaping is proven to not only enhance the look of your home but also save life from fire. Firefighters respond to 15 wildfires a day in Florida. Woody and suburban homes were mostly the subject of fire dangers. When a period of drought follows a freeze, the risk of fire increases due to the die-off of tender perennials. If plants are inappropriately placed and arranged, a higher jeopardy could be perceived. But when it is designed properly, there is less risk of fire.

Region where fire is almost zero

1.Secure an area allowance of 30-foot around your house of 100-foot space if your house is situated in a thick forested area or hill. Remove all flammable bushes and trees, such as pines, boxwood, wax myrtle and organic mulches within this zone.

2.Make sure remaining trees of at least 10 feet apart. For risky zones, crop lower part of trees and make sure that the trees are at least 6 feet from the soil. With loppers, remove "ladder fuels," such as vines and shrubs that carry a ground fire up into the treetops or home soffits.

3.Plant bushes that could not adapt to fire such as cactus, no nearer than 10 feet away from each other and a least possible of 5 feet from any construction. Install a variety of plants instead of a dense monoculture.

4.Mount drip irrigation around all plants and equipped bedding with moisture delicate timers. A hose located close to the plants but away from buildings would be ideal.

5.Provide non-living insulation such as lava rocks or course gravel in a five-foot beds around the structure. In between plants, put in insulation like a course gravel.

6.Remove dead vegetation, mow grass and prune shrubs and trees routinely. Eliminate anything that could catch fire from underneath the trees.

Advices and Precautions

Plants that are unaffected by fire are aloe, pittosporum, coontie, camellia and azalea. The list of extremely combustible trees and shrubs consist of red cedar, Italian cypress, bald cypress and arborvitae.

Get professional help from a tree specialist or landscaper to get rid of tree and shrub. Do not work on a chainsaw without proper training. Do not bare yourself when removing limbs, use the appropriate safety clothing.
