Thinking about taking the plunge and diving back into the academic world? After dropping out of college it can be a little scary, intimidated, and nerve-wrecking to jump back in, especially if you are older than what some would call the normal college age. It seems that everyone has had a need to meet with a nurse at one time or another, and through these experiences of nursing, we are able to see the importance a good nurse can have in a time of trouble. Experiences with bad nurses especially can taint the view of a patient towards hospitals, and the health care system in general. An experience with a nurse who is inefficient, does their job poorly, and dehumanizes patients can make an individual rightly fear nurses in their future. The negative impact of a poor nurse is huge and can have serious and lasting effects on the patients he or she may treat.
However, the impact that can be made by a nurse who does his or her job well and who has genuine compassion for their patients can be equally great and will leave an equally lasting legacy. A great nurse, not unlike a great teacher, singer, or mathematician, has the potential to influence life and the world for good. Because of the powerful effect nurses can have, it is important that nurses are well educated, not only in bookwork but also in empathy and compassion. Often the best nurses have had experiences with medical problems of have seen medical problems of those close to them.
Now that you are a little older and a little wiser you are probably more familiar with your own personal likes and dislikes, you are more likely to know what you prefer to do during the day, and you probably have a good idea of what it is you would like to study. Of course other factors that go into choosing your program and or field of study may include: cost, time, availability, and your own personal ability.

Her influences on the world of mental health and more specifically, mental health nursing can still be seen in the world today. As the need for good nurses increases, it may be a good time to consider a career in nursing administration or nursing education. A career in the health sciences can be extremely fulfilling.
