Use A Blog For Fandoms To Share Your Particular Passion

By Etta Bowen

Back in the day, if you really loved a movie franchise or a television series, you'd have to attend fan conventions to meet others who feel like you do. Nowadays you can meet them online. There are many blogs specifically for fans of a particular thing and these are a great place to share your ideas. You may even create a blog for fandoms and allow other fans to comment.

There is a fandom for almost everything under the sun. You'll find ones for specific sports teams, for bands, for movies and TV shows and even for books. Fans of a certain author will have their own fandom and there are also ones for specific genres, for instance Japanese manga. A fandom can be quite organized, with its own fanzine, website and events. You'll also find that some fans take their passion very seriously, to the point of obsession.

Probably the most famous fandom is the one known as Trekkies. These are fans of the 'Star Trek' television series and films. They organize conventions where they dress up as their favorite characters, including Captain Kirk or Spock. Some have learned to speak Klingon, a language developed specifically for the series, and there are even Klingon versions of great Shakespeare plays.

Another science fiction series that has gathered a devoted fan base is the 'Star Wars' films. Like Trekkies, fans of the 'Star Wars' franchise are very serious about their passion. Many are willing to pay thousands of dollars for original figurines of characters such as Darth Vader, Han Solo, Princess Leia or Chewbacca. This is also the fandom to belong to if you've always wanted to wield a light saber.

Some people don't like sports cars but prefer something with more character. In science fiction fandom terms, these are the people who prefer the Serenity, the spaceship from the series 'Firefly'. This was a so-called space Western that lasted only one season but got fans as famous as the gang from 'The Big Bang Theory'. 'Firefly' fans are called Browncoats and they often take part in charity events, raising large amounts of money. They will also tell you all about the wonders of the Jayne hat.

While science fiction is a fertile breeding ground for fandoms, the fantasy genre is not far behind. One of the most devoted groups is the fans of 'Game of Thrones'. Fans dress up like their favorite characters, live for the next episode and some can even speak Dothraki, a language invented for the series.

Another fantasy series that has dedicated fans is 'Discworld', the comical novels by Terry Pratchett. These fans normally have a very good sense of humor to go with the books and their quirky characters. Pratchett often mentioned something called 'The Hedgehog Song' in his books and fans then made up hilarious lyrics to this non-existent song.

If you want to start a blog about that which you are passionate about, you have many options. You can focus on general aspects and forums. Otherwise, you may want to look at specifics, for instance how to make costumes. Many Browncoats, for example, will appreciate that pattern for knitting their own Jayne hat.
