Furniture Restoration Austin; Do It Yourself Tips

By Ericka Marsh

Furniture restoration in the city Austin, TX does not have to be done by stripping. Here is an easier alternative that also preserves the coating and appeal of previous finish. The wood piece will be the same as it was originally. When your item is old and broken, do not throw it away. Here are tips on furniture restoration Austin.

Wiping on mineral spirits will help you determine the next step. This works to give you an insight on how the furniture looks like with just but a coat of clear finish. Do thorough cleaning as a first step to restore the wood-piece. The recommended agent for cleaning is a mixture of water and dish soap made from liquid ivory. This should be in the same proportion as in dish washing. The process of cleaning involves gently scrubbing the furniture surface using a sponge dipped into the solution and squeezed off the extra solution. Carvings and molded parts are better cleaned using a paint brush.

Eliminate the white rings using petroleum jelly. Alternatively you can use special removers. Smear the ring first using the jelly and leave it overnight. The oil penetrates the finish and eliminates the ring or makes it less.

When scraping the paint, special precautions are taken so as not to damage the finish. You can use a razor blade and two masking tape pieces to make a paint scraper which is delicate. First, you wrap the masking tape about each blade end, then the blade is bed slightly to curve. The next step is filling the damage using epoxy. After epoxy putty is mixed scrupulously, it is pressed into the repair area. Missing patina, flaked wood and also damaged molding can be fixed with this putty.

After the epoxy has hardened; this could take several hours, you can now sand and tinge the repair. The repair is blended onto the surrounding surface through gel stain painting which matches color and design. Select two stain colors matching bright and obscure wood areas. A dab of both is put on a wood scrap creating various color ranges by unifying the two.

Gel stain is then worked onto the surface and the excess wiped. It does not remove dark stains left by water or reduce the effects, but rather hides fine scratches and hue where finish has worn out.

Fill the tiny cracks. If there are any nail hovels or small cracks after making the last finish, fill the holes with wax that is colored, wax sticks, wax mending sticks or plug pencils. You can remove small cavities by making them wet. The water makes the crushed wood to swell and its fibers to get back to the original shape. For it to work, water must get inside the wood.

Finally all these come to completion after wiping on a finishing coat. The importance of this is to bring back the sheen and protection of the furniture surface. One can use any wipe to finish the work.
