Mailmen And Their Place In Todays Society

By George Dodson

In the words of Mark Twain, In a little while all interest was taken up in stretching our necks and watching for the "pony-rider"--the fleet messenger who sped across the continent from St. Joe to Sacramento, carrying letters nineteen hundred miles in eight days! Think of that for perishable horse and human flesh and blood to do! Mail has become an integral element of our lives from that time. As a kid, I waited for hours on end to receive the most minute of items in the mail.

Much has changes over the last decade. Technology has replaced snail mail. There is still a fair share of reliance on snail mail though at present. The postal services still play a huge role in society to this day.

What are their tasks?

They sort and deliver mail and packages (occasionally) to homes and businesses.

What are the benefits of being a mail carrier?

You havent got to have a doctorate in postal service education to be a mail carrier. For those in that category, it means you can get a good paying job even if you didnt graduate. The pay is sufficient in some countries. Most mail carriers start out in the $25,000 dollar range. Those who have been doing the job for some time can command salaries of up to $60000 per annum.

Postal workers are part of the federal employee health benefits program. They have an excellent retirement program as well. Various fringe benefits such as life insurance and savings are provided. They also have the benefit of free exercise if they choose to walk to deliver mail. They can feel the crisp morning and afternoon air regularly. They expand their social circumstances they are always meeting new people on their rounds. They quickly become experienced as their work involves a specific routine. They are not tied to a desk for 8 hours a day and are free to deliver their mail. Veteran postal officers can receive a lesser score on their postal service examination with no implications. This is a plus point over those who have never served in the military. For more information and advice on postal service positions, visit the USPS website. Mail carriers still have a place in their 21st century. By securing position in this industry, you are following in the footsteps of many who came before you.If you choose to become one yourself, you are part of an age-old tradition that will continue to thrive for years to come.
