The Rigorous Life Of A Dancer

By Leslie Griffith

The life of a dancer is quite rigorous. Those who strive to make this their career usually start learning at a very young age. To excel in this profession requires hard work and devotion. Some see this career as glamorous, but in reality it is quite challenging.

For those who choose this as a career, the first thing needed is self discipline. Hours of every day must be devoted to improving your techniques. Expect to practice for literally hours each day. This includes not only dancing, but strengthening and stretching your muscles. Your body must be fine tuned to do all the movement entailed in being a professional dancer.

The type of training involved can vary as much as the different dance styles vary. Exercises for someone studying ballet can be quite different than someone studying ballroom dancing. For any type of dance, the body needs to be physically fit. Eating healthily is an absolute must. Weight gain can throw off the balance of the performance. You must always be in top form.

A majority of your time will be spent doing practices and rehearsals. Each dance will have a different choreography to learn. Just getting a job can be stressful. Expect to audition, and expect a lot of competition. For only a few jobs, hundreds may audition. Keeping a strict schedule for your practicing may be what makes you stand out from all the others.

Once you get a job on a show or doing a performance, the workout really begins. There are hours of rehearsals to get the movements just right. Then, of course, there is the show itself. You definitely want to be at your best when on stage. Many times the day starts early and ends late. You cannot let frustration or tiredness get you down. It will show in your performance. The key to being a good performer is making something that is actually difficult appear to be effortless. This separates the professional from the amateur.

Doing this every day requires a very dedicated person. Even when you are aching all over, the show must go on. For those who have a true passion to dance, this is not a problem. If you actually love the art of expressing yourself through music and dance, your performance on stage will show it.

Anyone who has a true passion for dancing knows the rewards are worth any and all hardships suffered. Though you may not get rich with money, you will get riches of another kind. The applause, along with the knowledge that you have done your best is a satisfaction that money cannot buy. It can be a dream come true when you are on stage and look out at an appreciative audience.

There is nothing more graceful than a talented performer. Even though the life of a dancer can be quite strenuous, for most it is worth all the hard work. If this is something you are thinking of pursuing, just be prepared to devote most of your time to perfecting your techniques. If you do succeed, it will have been time very well spent.
