Information On Gradual Radon Testing Illinois

By Megan Landry

Radon exists as an odorless and colorless gas that is formed by decaying of uranium. Homes are exposed to approximately 100 Bq/m3 indoors. The gas gets into the house by means such as cracks, gaps or cavities in the house structure. The gas mostly penetrates into the house through the lowest area in the house in contact with the ground. Radon is the second most cause of lung cancer in the USA. Radon testing Illinois is a sure way of detecting this gas. The following are the ways in which to do a proper test

A radon sampling test kit has to be acquired from a reputed dealer who is licensed and accredited. It is very cost effective and user friendly. The minimum sampling period is less than 3 days and afterwards data analysis is done by a reputable lab. The test results are then dispatched back to you and the necessary steps are taken in the event of radon exposure.

The house has to be on lock down for a minimum of 12 hrs before the radon kit is put in use. This is to ensure that if any gas is present, it will not escape out and thereby give inaccurate results. It has to be noted that the air in your home is the sample needed.

The radon set is then open and all the contents are removed. It should have sampling flasks, a sheet explaining what the test is about. Some sets have record entry sheets as well as location of the laboratory where specimen will be sent

It is advisable to conduct the test where your home is in closest contact with the earth, preferably the basement. This is because it is the most likely place radon gas has got into your home either through fissures or cracks in the foundations. These areas should be identified and sealed off.

Place the apparatus at least 20 inches from the floor and maintain a distance of 6 inches between them. A tape is recommended to measure so that the distance is accurate. A steel ruler is often the best toll for this job.

The caps of the testing containers are then removed and left without any sort of disturbance. Make sure that no one interferes with the test containers and that they are not moved from their designated spot. They should just be left to their own devises for this time period.

After a few days, the samples are ready for radon analysis. Under no circumstance should they be left for more than a week or thereabouts. Throughout the sampling period, windows and door should not be opened extensively; sprays should not be used at all as this will bring about interferences in the data.

After the minimum wait time has passed, replace the lids carefully and fill out the data sheet that was in the radon kit. You can also fill out the cost sheet if it is available. You should secure the test containers and send it to the laboratories as soon as possible in order to ensure optimum and accurate results for radon testing Illinois.
