By Elena McDowell

Children have always loved hearing stories. Often the bedtime story is one of the favorite times of day, enjoyed by both parent and child. Hearing about heroes, villains, dangerous beasts and daring adventures not only helps to stimulate the imagination but gives children the opportunity to play out many of their concerns and fears. They also begin to develop an understanding of the relationship between printed words and what they mean. Many parents are now using read along stories online as a resource.

Interactive websites can do a great deal to help children become fluent readers. Reading fluently is vital to being able to interact in the world today and battling with this skill can put one at a lifelong disadvantage. The availability of many good quality audio books assists parents in stimulating the reading abilities of their children.

There are a wide variety of tales available. Classic fairy tales, fables, modern originals and Bible stories are just some examples. These tales are often wonderfully illustrated and many of them are animated. Modern technology makes it possible to download these audio books in different formats suitable for many different devices.

Audio books can help to capture the imagination of a child in a world where a paper book may seem boring. The child can also be more actively involved in the sense that they can pick a story themselves from a selection. They can then listen to the voice of someone skilled at reading, such as that of a famous actor. This demonstration gives them more understanding of how the words should be pronounced and about phrasing.

Audio playback may even come with highlighting of words, making following along even easier. This means that all the senses of the child are stimulated. They can see the words, hear them being read and then follow along and say the words themselves too. Easy instructions buttons are often available to allow a child to proceed at their own pace and to stop or go back if they need to.

Many of these books are written for young children who have just begun reading. The best way for them to become fluent is by practicing their skills. As they hear and see the word, voice it out loud and start to string sentences together, they become so absorbed in the process that they are not even aware of learning new skills. Children who experience problems with reading also benefit.

There are many websites of this nature offering parents some amazing resources. It is easy for them to download a whole collection of these audio books. This gives their children the chance to practice their reading whenever they want to, without having to depend on the parent. They can even practice while parents are busy with other activities like shopping or driving.

Far from just offering a means for parents to keep their children entertained, read along stories online offer great educational opportunities. Children have a real chance of becoming fluent readers. This skill gives them a great head start and opens many doors not available to those who are poor readers.
